      <biogHist><p>&lt;b&gt;1842 */ Bruxelles, Rue Ducale, près du Parc (Palais d'Orange)&lt;/b&gt;
° 22.12.1801; + 7.6.1885. Entrepreneur and pioneer of photography who played a prominent role in establishing professional photography in Brussels. The Bazar Pantechnique was a group of shops situated in the former stables of the Prince of Orange. One of these shops housed the photographic studio managed by Billing (see that name). The advertisements linked this studio, opened in March 1842, to Beard’s studio in London. It was thus the only studio managed by a Beard patentee or agent outside Great Britain. The patent granted to Beard the right to exploit the daguerreotype in England, Wales and the British colonies. Beard had also acquired rights over using the Wolcott camera, a piece of equipment used in the Brussels studio and for which William Wright (see that name) had taken out a Belgian patent in March 1841.</p></biogHist>
