1888 * / Spa, Avenue du Marteau Jules Abel Raoul Marié - Duplan, ° 3.1.1854; + 10.5.1913. Recorded as a bank clerk at his wedding in Paris in August 1880. "At the start of the season, the "Villa du comte de Lamarck" was let until 1st November to a Frenchman, a presentable young man with a prominent but not disfiguring scar on one cheek. Equipped with a simple amateur's camera and little else, he placed a sign on the fence in the front garden that read pretentiously "Photographie Parisienne". Since he was the only photographer in Spa [sic], business was brisk" (L'Indépendance Belge, 18.10.1888). Duplan's stay in Spa ended with a bang. He fell into a heated argument with his visiting brother in law, who drew a gun and fired six shots, hitting Duplan in his left hand before being arrested. The newspaper report concluded: "The wound is not serious. Duplan was due to take over a photography business in Brussels at the end of the month and was already preparing his departure." No evidence of further photographic activity has been uncovered. Duplan was recorded as a "publiciste" (journalist or copywriter) on his death certificate.
