      <biogHist><p>&lt;b&gt;1898 Congo Free State&lt;/b&gt;
Georges Frédéric, ° 26.2.1873; + 6.2.1950. Initially left for Congo as a sub-lieutenant in the "Force publique" on 6.10.1896. Back in Belgium to convalesce from illness in 1898, he was commissioned by "Diorama International" (see that name) to take stereoscopic views of the inauguration of the Congo railway and of upper Congo. He left from Antwerp on 11.6.1898 and the views were expected to be delivered by late August. The resulting "Trip to the Congo" was shown, for instance, in the Liège branch of "Diorama International" from 28.5.1899 to 4.6.1899: "The views feature the inauguration of the railway in July 1898 and a trip from Boma to Matadi then to Leopoldville, Bangala, Kwamouth, Umange, etc. Opponents and supporters of the Congo alike can form a precise idea of the dark country by means of the stereoscope operated by the Diorama. Children will not be admitted to this presentation" (La Meuse, 2.6.1899). Gilson returned to Europe in 1908 and pursued a successful military career, retiring with the rank of general.</p></biogHist>
