Constantin François (Frans), ° 8.2.1863; + 8.7.1955. Arrived in Antwerp on 28.2.1887 coming from Amsterdam [NL], when he was declared as a photographer. A self-styled "professor of retouching", Kania set up a school and laboratory at this address to give instruction. A police report of 28.4.1893 stated: "Kania is occupied particularly with retouching and enlarging artistic photographs and painting, which gives him an income of around 6 500 francs a year. He is well known and has a strong clientele amongst the nobility [sic]". An advertising flyer for his "Ecole de Retouche" incorporates testimonials written between August 1891 and May 1892 by nine satisfied customers including eight members of the ABP. For instance Gustave Van Bellingen wrote that "... although having little notion of drawing, I have learned from Professor Kania how to retouch photographic negatives in thirty lessons". The school was short-lived and was probably dissolved by early 1894 when Kania left Antwerp for Brussels.

Retoucher. "Constant" in the population register, "Kama" in the 1895 directory. Arrived at this address on 18.4.1894 coming from Antwerp and left on 21.11.1894.

Retoucher. Arrived at this address on 21.11.1894 and was removed from the population register in April 1904, having failed to report his departure to the communal authorities. Kania was registered back in Antwerp in 1913. At this juncture he was recorded using two aliases, Zarubaly and Engels, and as not having an occupation or visible means of support. A posthumous genealogical source gives his full name as Charles Constantin Kania De Zarubaly.</p></biogHist>
