There is a link with the Macaire family who operated in Paris and Le Havre [F] in the 1850s and 1860s: the leading Daguerreotypist and maker of seascapes Louis Cyrus Macaire (1807 - 1871) was his uncle. Gustave Macaire operated in Bordeaux [F], rue de la Bourse, 22 in the 1860s and early 1870s. Subsequently operated in Binche, Charleroi, Liège and Tournai under the trade name "Photographie Parisienne" (see that name), 1874 - 1880. 1874 - 1876 Binche, Place Saint-Jean, 3 Recorded in the foreigners register in 1872. Founder member of the ABP. 1886 Ostende, Avenue Léopold "Opposite the theatre and next to the Kursaal. Speciality: portrait souvenirs of sea bathing. Ladies' posing is directed by Mme Macaire, painter" (advertisements, August to October 1886). For Madame Macaire's identity, see below. 1887 * - 1891 / Courtrai, Rue de la Lys, 12 Predecessor: De Bedts Veuve Auguste Arrival in Courtrai from Wavre recorded in May 1887 even though Macaire had been Veuve De Bedts' successor as of 1.3.1887, acquiring "negatives taken since 1859" (L'Écho de Courtrai, 14.8.1887). Announcement of transfer again published on 11.3.1888. Initial "S." or "J." in the directories. The initial S stands for Silbermann. Macaire was accompanied by Anne Marie "Henriette" Silbermann (° Paris [F], 13.10.1837; + Neuilly-sur-Seine [Hauts-de-Seine, F], 25.10.1925). The monogram "SM" on the backmark of CVs confirms that their partnership was also professional in nature as does the statement "Mr and Mme Macaire's fine work recommends them especially to our honorable clientele in Flanders" (L'Écho de Courtrai, 14.8.1887). The studio was put up for sale again in 1890: "Photography [studio] for sale. Turnover 18 000 [francs]. Apply to De Bedt [sic], Courtrai" (Le Petit Journal, Paris, 21.5.1890). The attempt was clearly unsuccessful as there is no record of any successor at this address. Following the couple's departure in March 1891, they set up a studio in Tourcoing [F], Rue Nationale, 120 under the denomination Macaire - Silbermann. This studio also traded as "Photographie Catholique" and was declared bankrupt in June 1895. A branch operated in Lille [F], Rue Gambetta, 66. At the occasion of his wedding to Marie Louise Séghers (° La Madeleine [Nord, F], 6.4.1869) in Paris on 13.4.1896, Macaire was recorded as a chemist domiciled in Lille [F], but resident in Paris.
