The French trade directories for the period record a single Richard in the list of engineers - Louis Richard, a civil engineer and graduate of the "Ecole centrale des arts et manufactures" in Paris. A certain Victor Richard, a native of Gourdinnes, graduated in mining engineering from the University of Liège in 1843 but cannot be situated to Paris.
