      <biogHist><p>&lt;b&gt;1859 - 1866 / Bruxelles - Saint-Josse, Rue du Méridien, 36 (private)&lt;/b&gt;
° 9.7.1821; + January 1914. Lithographer who became the first photomechanical printer in Belgium. Born into a family of engravers and printers, he was the brother of Edwin Toovey (1826 - 1906), an artist in the Romantic tradition. Partner in Simonau &amp; Toovey (see that name). He arrived in Brussels from London in 1847. He lived at this address from 8.1.1856 until 31.12.1866, when he announced his departure for Brussels. Patent of 1.7.1863 for "improvements in the processes of photolithography, photozincography and photographic engraving" [improved Asser process]. In 1863 he took part in the Duc de Luynes competition, organised by the "Société française de photographie", for permanent processes. He exhibited specimens of photolithography at SFP exhibitions in 1861, 1863 and 1864 under the firm's name and under his own name at the Photographic Society of London's annual exhibition in 1864, for which he was awarded a silver medal. He left Belgium between 1870 and 1873 and subsequently practised his profession of lithographer in Great Britain.</p></biogHist>
