Auguste Victor Louis, ° 17.9.1864; + 21.7.1931. Secondary school teacher. President of the "Université populaire d'Etterbeek". Author of several guide books to tourist spots in the Belgian countryside published between 1894 and 1912. He took some 3 000 slides of Belgian monuments and landscapes. Van Gele sold many views to Edouard Joseph Nels (see that name) to constitute an image bank for his nascent business of picture postcard publishing. Chairman of the jury judging competitions for the periodical "Le sentiment d'art en photographie" (see Liorel). Won first prize in a competition organised by the ABP under the patronage of the "Automobile Club de Belgique" in 1902. Van Gele was also the Belgian agent for the Sigriste camera in 1903, when living at Rue d'Oultremont, 21 in Brussels - Etterbeek. Sixth prize (50 francs) winner in the Gevaert international competition 1911-1912. The Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels possesses 1 598 glass negatives taken by Van Gele between 1898 and 1920, depicting picturesque views and historic buildings.</p></biogHist>
