<b>1847 [Belgium (views of)]</b> ° 31.7.1805; + 25.6.1892. Calotypist. Scottish musician, piano maker, music publisher. Photographs taken during a visit to Belgium in July and August 1847: Bruges (28-30.7.1847) where he made nine known views, Ghent (30.7-1.8.1847), Malines (1.8.1847) and Brussels (1-5.8.1847), locations recorded in his diary. Also views of Antwerp and Louvain, locations not recorded in his diary, which breaks off in Liège on 8.8.1847. All known images were made from calotype negatives. They constitute one of the oldest complete sets of Belgian topographic photographs that have survived intact. Holdings in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
