A native of Manchester [GB]. Import patent of 20.3.1841 for "a new apparatus for transferring drawings and other objects of nature or art to metal surfaces prepared by a new process" [daguerreotype camera invented by John Johnson]. Supplementary patent relating to improvements of 4.8.1841 [set-up of the glass studio]. This covers the system worked by Richard Beard (see that name), who opened one of the first two studios in Belgium, in the Bazar Pantechnique in Brussels, in March 1842, operated by Billing. Import patent of 30.10.1843 for "improvements in photography" [daguerreotype camera]. William Wright of Salford [Lancashire, GB], described as a "machine maker", had previously patented improvements to cotton-twisting machinery on 22.6.1836.</p></biogHist>
