Auguste Julius, ° 2.3.1851; + 23.1.1928. Optician and watchmaker. Constructed a camera for kite photography in 1888. Two views in the collection of the Museum of Photography in Antwerp, taken in Antwerp Zoo and dated to 1888, are signed "A. Agthe". Photographs of the 1889 disaster of Antwerp (explosion of an ammunition factory). Member of the photographic section of the "Cercle artistique, littéraire et scientifique d’Anvers", commissioner in 1903-1905. His father, Christophe Julius Agthe (° Sangerhausen [Prussia], 31.7.1818), active as a watchmaker in Antwerp since March 1839, was registered as a watchmaker and optician at this address in 1880. Ink stamp on views, c. 1880, "J. Agthe & Fils / Horloger Opticien" at this address, pointing to the sale of photographs.
