Photographic supplies. Glass plates exist with a label "Photographie J. Ballion" and possibly dated 1878. Jean Baptiste Ballion (° Ostend, 24.6.1842; + Ostend, 8.2.1898) was recorded at this address in 1882 as a member of the "Société Géoloqique de Belgique". Leading collector of living and fossil molluscs, he gave lectures to the scientific congress in Ghent in 1890 and the "Société scientifique de Bruxelles" in 1896. It is unclear why Jean Ballion was posthumously listed as a photographic supplier at this address, unless the activity should be more properly associated with another family member such as his son Jacques Henri (1875 - 1913).
