Jacques Raphaël, ° 18.6.1803; + 11.1.1878. Optician. Initially a manufacturer and wholesaler in fashion and fancy goods established in Rue des Eperonniers, 28. Manufacturer of theatre glasses. "Firm founded in 1834" (successor’s statement in 1902). Barboni was assisted by his wife, Marie Vanderveken (° Malines, 29.5.1797; + Brussels, 31.7.1862). Around 1851, labels “daguereotype [sic] portraits on plate and paper from 5 to 50 francs”. Barboni was present in the photographers' convoy together with L.P.T. Dubois de Nehaut (see that name) to record the Silver Jubilee celebrations of King Leopold I in July 1856. His intention was to take photographs (or supervise the taking of photographs) to be reproduced as lithographs for a de luxe commemorative album. An ensuing publication depicted "the main episodes of the celebrations ...[reproduced] after photographs specially taken by Mr Barboni" (L'Eclaireur, 15.3.1857).
Registered as a person of private means in 1866 in the population registry, but still as a photographer in the business directory. His son Adrien became a partner in the studio around 1850 and it would appear that he gave up the business on his son's death.
