Previously recorded as a hawker living in Liège on various occasions from November 1855 to June 1868 and in Malines in May 1862. This is the typical career path of an itinerant or fairground photographer, either as main or secondary profession. In 1880, Engels was registered as a studio photographer in Bapaume [Pas-de-Calais, F] in collaboration with his children; subsequently on CVs, "Engels frères & soeurs". When the family moved to Gouy-sous-Bellonne [Pas-de-Calais, F] in 1887, Engels' children continued working as itinerant or fairground photographers while he seems to have retired.
