Activity

1858 Anvers, Groenplaats, 1
Painter and photographer. Stayed in Antwerp for four years. There is an advertisement for Daguerreotype portraits at "The Photographic Institution conducted by Mr Brown, late of London and Antwerp", 30 Union Street, Dundee [Scotland, GB] (Dundee Courier, 25.2.1850); he was described as a "daguerreotypist and teacher of drawing and painting" and had been operating from September 1849. Subsequently John C. Brown, "landscape painter", was living in Viewforth Cottage, Leith [Scotland, GB] in 1851. No trace has been found of Brown's earlier, pre-1849 stay in Antwerp. It is possible that he was not yet operating as a Daguerreotypist at that point in time.
1859 Anvers, Vieux Marché au Blé, 79
Listed as a photographer at this address in the 1859 trade directory. Domiciled at this address from 23.10.1858 to 26.3.1860, according to the population registry. An advertisement stated that he was living at Suikerrui 5 on 31.12.1859.
