Charles François Gommaire, ° 13.10.1837; + 13.7.1914. Mayor of the city of Brussels from 1881 until 1899. Inveterate traveller. Gave a talk about the cradle and tomb of Diocletian in Split at the ''Société d'Archéologie de Bruxelles'' in January 1891, which was illustrated with "a series of remarkable photographs". Thereafter Buls took numerous photographs when travelling and gave illustrated talks on his return, such as on Siam to the Brussels section of the ABP on 14.11.1900, and on Sicily to the "Touring Club de Belgique" in January or February 1903. Member of the jury for annual photography competitions held by the "Touring Club de Belgique" from 1902 to 1905. The Buls collection, including sketchbooks, photograph albums and loose prints, is housed in the Brussels municipal archives.
