Buyle retired from photography in the late 1920s to devote his time to painting, "... returning to his first love", to borrow an expression used in a review of his work at the "Salon des Artistes" in 1930. "In fact Gust. Buyle was engaged in painting in his youth. After working for a time in decoration painting, he then set up as an art photographer. Now he has retired from business and has re-appeared as an artist. The most diverse genres are sources of inspiration to him" (Het Handelsblad, 31.1.1930). Soon after his death, Gustave Buyle's collection of "old and modern paintings, weaponry and musical instruments" was dispersed at auction in Antwerp on 13.4.1937.
