Activity
1897 * - 1903 / Bruxelles, Rue Antoine Dansaert, 13 renumbered 15 <10.8.00>
Désiré Joseph Gustave, ° 20.7.1836; + 28.4.1908. Initially recorded as a person of independent means or having no occupation in the population registry then as a photographer at the wedding of his daughter Clémentine (see that name) in Brussels on 22.12.1900. It is probable that two generations were operating at this address simultaneously. This would include his son Georges Louis Eugène Joseph (° Brussels, 22.4.1879). Georges, a witness at his sister's wedding, was also recorded as a photographer in Brussels. Georges was absent from Brussels from 22.2.1901 until 4.9.1902. Alternatively, a certain Guillaume Charels (° Brussels, 22.11.1877) was recorded as a photographer in Brussels in July 1899 and as a "portrait worker" in Brussels when witness on the death certificate of his father Chrétien Charels, a tailor, on 15.9.1902.
1903 * - 1908 + Bruxelles, Rue de l'Education, 49<04-05> then 55<06-08>
"Charels, C." in the Mertens directories. The population registry recorded that the family moved to Rue de l'Education, 47 on 20.4.1903, then to no. 55 on 6.2.1907. On the occasion of his wedding in Brussels on 22.8.1904, Georges was recorded as a commercial traveller living in Rue du Poinçon, 14 whereas his father Gustave's occupation was given as photographer. Cessation of operations at this address coincided with Gustave's death. The studio equipment was sold off in April 1909 (Le Soir, 11.4.1909).
