Henri Coenraets was an associate in the architectural practice of Joseph Poelaert, designer and builder of the Brussels "Palais de Justice", one of the largest buildings in the world at its inauguration on 15.10.1883. A series of half-plate prints, signed "H. et F.C." or "H. et F. Coenraerts", documents the completed edifice in all its details. "Ferdinand" Louis Joseph Coenraets (° Brussels - Ixelles, 28.10.1860; + Brussels - Woluwé-Saint-Pierre, 3.12.1939) was a surveyor and future artist-illustrator. At a family wedding in Brussels on 18.12.1884 at which they were both witnesses, Henri was recorded as an architect aged 26 resident in Brussels - Ixelles, and Ferdinand as a surveyor ("géomètre") aged 24, also resident in Brussels - Ixelles. Henri Coenraerts was still recorded as an architect resident in Brussels - Ixelles at another family wedding on 3.7.1886 (the groom another Henri Coenraets) but leaves no further trace as an architect. A collection of 40 prints, presented to the Dutch King Willem III and Queen Emma to mark their state visit in May 1884, is held in the royal collections in The Hague.
