Jean Baptiste Henri Joseph Marie, ° 31.3.1849; + 3.4.1932. Person of independent means; son of John Cogels (1814-1885), landowner, property developer and politician. A set of 12 half-plate portraits of Congolese participating in the 1894 Antwerp universal exhibition is housed in the MAS - Museum aan de Stroom, Antwerp. "Mr Cogels has confined his laboratory to the centre of a building, such as to remove any natural light. So, with his powerful electrical installations, he has been lavish with artificial light throughout... Lighting and heating, all work on electricity" (Helios illustré, 15.2.1895, p. 306).
Cogels’ other passion was yachting; his yacht, the "Express", a model of which was displayed at the same exhibition, was described as "one of the largest and fastest vessels in our pleasure fleet" (Gazet van Antwerpen, 15.6.1894). Cogels was also a member of the sports committee of the "Royal Automobile Club Anversois" in 1899. Still a member of the ABP in 1922.
