° 30.8.1879; + announced 13.8.1910. Anthropologist, explorer and linguist. Graduate of the "Ecole agricole de Gembloux". General representative of the "Société Franco-Belge L'Alimaïenne", a firm active in mining and rubber production in the French Congo. In 1898-1899 Courboin had undertaken exploration of Amazonia in Brazil, subsequently publishing an account of his time there, "Chez les Indiens, notes et souvenirs d'un séjour dans l'Amazonie", Bulletin de la Société Royale de Géographie d'Anvers, vol. 25, 1901, pp. 83-128. In the Congo, he took a series of photographs that documented indigenous life, the "civilising" actions of European colonisers as well as the activities of the firm employing him. They were disseminated as collotype postcards with the running credit "Collection A. Courboin". Courboin also compiled a grammar of the Bangala language, published in 1908.
