An obituary recounted that his father was a Roumanian count and that de Cerkez was educated at the University of Brussels before practising as a lawyer in the French courts. After emigrating to the USA, he became an insurance agent. Signed a request for naturalisation in New Jersey [USA] in July 1905 as Edward Demetre de Cerkez, adopting his father's forename for himself.
