° 23.4.1824; + 14.11.1895. Engineer, graduated from the "Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées" at the University of Ghent in 1847. Teacher in 1861 at the "Ecole industrielle de Gand" where in 1862 he organised public courses in photography which he gave for 32 years. This was one of the first official photography courses in Europe (the first according to the "Bulletin de l’ABP"). Member of the jury at the International Exhibition in Paris, 1867. Teacher at the "Athénée Royal" in Ghent. From 1870, De Vylder wrote a photographic review in the "Bulletin du Musée de l'Industrie". In 1871, member of the organising committee of the International Exhibition in London. He was appointed director of the new industrial school in 1887.
Member of the "Société française de photographie" from 2.12.1864. Founder member of the ABP, De Vylder was one of the initiators of the Association. First president of the ABP from 1874 to 1877. Vice-president from 1883 to 1886. President of the Ghent section from 1888 to 1893.
