Pierre Jacques, ° 15.9.1799; + 19.5.1880. Senior municipal tax official or treasurer ("receveur de l'enregistrement et des domaines") in Tongeren when a photograph of the tower of the Church of Our Lady credited to him was reproduced as a lithograph in "Tongres et ses monuments" by A.F.C.T. Perreau, Tongres, 1849 (2nd edition). Founder member of the "Société Scientifique et Littéraire du Limbourg"; another lithograph from a photograph by Denis featuring a reliquary of the holy cross in the church treasury appeared in the "Bulletin de la Société Scientifique et Littéraire du Limbourg", vol. 1, 1852-1854. Denis was therefore a pioneering amateur photographer in Limbourg. Moved to Antwerp on 19.10.1857 on his appointment to a position of court recorder ("receveur de l'enregistement des actes judiciaires") and returned to Tongeren on 1.4.1868. By 1867 Denis had retired but was still described as an administrator of "Hospices Civils". Member of the ABP from 9.3.1875. "Landowner" in ABP membership lists, unmarried and a person of independent means on his death certificate.
A certain Denis (no forename) was listed as a professional photographer in Tongeren in C. Fabre, "Aide-mémoire de photographie", 1879, p. 198 and as late as 1896, p. 211, but we have not yet been able to corroborate this entry.
