° 31.1.1822; + 26.10.1896. Chemist. Professor of industrial chemistry at the University of Ghent from 1858. Member of the "Académie Royale des Sciences de Belgique", 1866. Studied the transformation of particular substances by the action of light. Invented and improved measuring instruments. He was interested in the volumetric analysis of gases. Numerous views of Ghent, taken between 1850 and 1860, are attributed to him. Published a formula for converting instantaneous collodion positives into dark black negatives (Journal of the Photographic Society of London, 1854, p. 186). He transformed a cab (hackney carriage) into a darkroom. Scientific and artistic photography. Improved the printing of transparent stereoscopic views onto glass. Recommended the use of coloured screens in 1878, which encouraged research into orthochromatic printing. Founder member of the ABP, of which he was one of the instigators. President of the Ghent section, 1874-1880.
