Dufourny and Edouard Walin (see that name) were charged by King Leopold II to undertake a mission to China, the main goal purpose of which was to negotiate the construction of the Peking-Hankou railway line. They eventually left for China in mid April 1897 and were to travel from Le Havre [Seine-Maritime, F] to New York and Vancouver [CA] to Shanghai [China]. In December 1897, it was announced that an exhibition would open on 14.1.1898 at the "Société des Ingénieurs", comprising more than 800 photographs taken by Dufourny, Welin and Lucien Janssen (see that name) during their travels through China and Japan (Le Soir, 15.12.1897).
