Jean Baptiste Alexandre Eugène, ° 29.5.1834; + 21.7.1885. Watchmaker. Constructed a prototype rapid-action shutter. Ernult registered a patent on 18.7.1885, just three days before he died, for "an automatic shutter for photographic cameras". Its main characteristics were "absolute stability, complete absence of vibration during exposure...Exposure shortened to 1/200th of a second ...as light and as compact as possible, handling utterly simple and within anyone's grasp" (Gustave De Vylder, "A propos d'un nouvel obturateur inédit pour photographie instantanée", Bulletin de l'Association belge de Photographie, vol. 12, 1885, p. 391).
