Life dates

Ehrenfeld (Cologne) [Prussia], 1863 - Eupen, 1930

Activity

1884 * - 1909 > Eupen [D], Neustrasse, 15
Predecessor: Laue Christian
° 29.11.1863; + 29.7.1930. Founded a dynasty of studio photographers that operated over four generations until 2010. Initially in partnership with Joseph or Josef Burghard who operated in Düren [D], Zehnhofstrasse. The partnership was dissolved on 3.10.1887 although Franken continued to pay indemnities to Burghard until 1890. Franken bought out the neighbouring business of photographer Alex. Köppelmann on 8.4.1888, no doubt to remove a source of competition. Photographs of the Gileppe dam dated 1890. Franken ran a branch studio in Bergisch Gladbach [D], Wilhelmstrasse for an unspecified period around 1900. Opened a modernised studio with electric lighting in Eupen in 1909. The Franken studio's legacy of over 100 000 negatives, referred to as "Eupen's memory on glass", is still being evaluated.
