1908 - 1909 / Saint-Antelinckx
There were four brothers native of Sint-Antelinks who were active in photography around this time: Camillus / Camille (° Herzele - Saint-Antelinckx, 5.1.1873), Hercule (° Herzele - Saint-Antelinckx, 17.5.1883), "Hector" Joseph (° Herzele - Saint-Antelinckx, 8.10.1887 or 1889) and "Gilbert" Gustaaf (° Herzele - Saint-Antelinckx, 22.9.1893 or 1894), On a postcard postmarked June 1908, "Photo Geerts Frères, St. Antelinckx. Same firm in Ninove, Ghent, Cruyshoutem [= Kruishoutem], Deynze.
Whatever ambition the family harboured to create a network of studios was brought to a shuddering halt when their sister was arrested on a charge of double murder, including infanticide, in July 1909. The brothers were soon arrested on suspicion of accessory to murder but were eventually released without charge. The sister made a confession on 13.8.1909 and implicated a younger brother Oscar, aged 16. On their release from custody, Camille was described as a market gardener in Ninove, Hercule as a photographer in Deinze and Gilbert as an assistant to Hercule in Deinze. Camille, who had arrived in Ninove, coming from Saint-Antelinckx, on 15.4.1908 was recorded in the population register as a photographer in Beverstraat, 32. Such was Camille's shame that he declared his intention of leaving the region (Le Petit Bleu du Matin, 23.9.1909) and did indeed declare a move to Brussels - Woluwe-Saint-Pierre on 9.10.1909.
For a sequel to the family's fortunes, see the entry for Hercule Geerts.
