Oscar Joannes Jacobus Augustus, ° 17.3.1834. Registered as a person of independent means and civil engineer by profession; son of a senior engineer and director of the department of "Ponts et Chaussées". Arrived in Bruges from Saint-Nicolas on 4.2.1862 and left for Brussels on 2.7.1864. It is unclear when Gerardot opened his studio but he advertised a portrait of Monseigneur Malou, Bishop of Bruges, on 31.3.1864, just a week after the prelate's death. Almost immediately afterwards, Gerardot attempted to sell his "townhouse, with a separate building in the garden serving as a photography studio" (Gazette van Brugge, 30.4.1864). However, the public auction was postponed as was a separate sale of "photographic instruments" (Journal de Bruges, 24.5.1864). The sale of "instruments and accessories of a magnificent photography studio and a superb collection of paintings, ancient and modern" (Journal de Bruges, 25.10.1865) finally went ahead on 30.10.1865. From 1865 onwards, Gerardot was involved, together with his father, in a failed project to construct a central-pillar bridge over the River Scheldt in Antwerp.
