Sometimes spelled "Gillis - Spaey". On CV, "large portraits on credit". Active in Roeselare/Roulers as early as May 1909, when a photographer from Roeselare named "Gillis" donated a large portrait to a celebrated professional cyclist (De Gazette van Rousselare, 15.5.1909). He repeated the action in August 1911, this time correctly referenced as "Gilles - Spaey" (De Landbouwer, 22.8.1911). Sports photography, cycling in particular, remained an important focus throughout his career as a photographer. On 11.2.1911 it was reported that he was robbed while moving from Sint-Alphonsusstraat [Rue Saint-Alphonse] to Wapenplaats, but we have so far been unable to confirm that he was active at Wapenplaats prior to 1919.
1911 ca Iseghem, Rue Neuve, 17
Branch studio, running concurrently with the main studio in Roulers, Rue Saint-Alphonse.
1914 Roulers, Ooststraat, 84
"Collotype, carbon printing, platinum". Also car rentals. Postcard, c. 1914, announcing the transfer to this address. Active in Roeselare in the immediate interwar period. In June 1919, Gilles - Spaey advertised that he had moved his studio to Wapenplaats, 14 (Het Nieuw Rousselare, 1.6.1919) where he was still operating in October 1921. He announced sale of the property at Wapenplaats, 4 by auction on 12.10.1921, stating that he would continue to operate there for a maximum of six months. By January 1923, he had moved his business to Vlamingstraat, 11 at which address he still practiced photography and offered car rentals. He likewise announced the public sale of his property in Vlamingstraat on 7.2.1923.
