Life dates

Minden [Prussia, D], 1836 - Leopoldsburg, 1916

Activity

1863 Tongres, Hasseltsche Straat, 5 (premises of G. Vandenrydt)
Christianus Joannes Henricus, ° 25.7.1836; + 2.12.1916. On the occasion of his wedding in Hasselt on 19.12.1859, his profession was given as bookbinder.
1866 Hasselt, Marché au Beurre, 6
Photographs of the military camp in Beverloo (Bourg-Léopold), c. 1866. Moved with his family from this address to Bourg-Léopold on 27.3.1873. Gotthold's son-in-law Joseph Nelissen - Gotthold (see that name) operated in Hasselt following his wedding to Gotthold's daughter on 8.10.1885.
1868 ca - 1893 ca Bourg-Léopold, "Opposite the Station"
Successor: Gotthold F. #
Bookbinder - framer. Recorded in c. 1868 as a photographer aged 32 domiciled in Bourg-Léopold. Still recorded as a bookbinder when he first registered in Bourg-Léopold (no street address) with his family on 28.3.1873. "Gotthold Père" still in the directory in 1902. No fewer than five sons were recorded as photographers operating at some point in Bourg-Léopold: Henri "Auguste" (° 1862), Frédéric Charles "Henri" (° 1866), Jean "Désiré" (° 1870), "Jean" Auguste Marcelin (° 1873), and Ferdinand "Alexandre" (° 1876). Three of these were given separate entries in trade directories for varying periods: Désiré, Alexandre and F. = (probably) Frédéric Charles Henri. It nevertheless remains unclear to what extent the sons were operating independently or as members of the same family business. For instance, J.H. Gotthold "father and son" were reported visiting Moll on 21.1.1906 to show "diachromatic photographs" at the "Katholieke Kring". Still recorded as a photographer domiciled in Bourg-Léopold, Rue de l'Hôpital, 3 on his death certificate.
