François Gustave, ° 13.5.1821; + 21.12.1893. "Ergault" on birth certificate (other sources erroneously state 1825 as birth year), "Ergaux" on death certificate. Arrived in Brussels, coming from Paris [F], on 9.12.1862. Various residential addresses when intermittently a labouring photographer in Brussels until at least 1866. Gustave Hergaux operated in The Hague [NL] in 1863-1864, initially in partnership as "Gustave & Menvielle", then alone. Already advertising as a photographer at this address in March 1870, when he announced that he would prolong his stay in Louvain until Easter (Le Réveil, 20.3.1870). Officially moved to this address on 16.11.1871 coming from Hasselt and left for Brussels - Laeken on 27.3.1876. Prints exist bearing the backmark "Gustave, Photographe Ateliers de La Dyle à Louvain (Belgique)". This title alludes to Hergaux's activity of photographing railway rolling stock manufactured by "Société anonyme des ateliers de la Dyle", Louvain. An album held by the "Biblioteca Nacional" in Madrid that documents the firm's output contains many prints signed "Gustave".
