Emile Armand Félix, ° 1 or 2.9.1848; + April 1921. Medical doctor and anthropologist. Initially a doctor and head of section at the "Hôpital Saint-Jean" in Brussels, Houzé turned to anthropology and was elected president of the "Société d'anthropologie de Bruxelles" in 1887. Appointed a lecturer in anthropology at the "Université libre de Bruxelles" in 1893, Houzé was promoted to professor in 1904. Named director of the anthropology section of the "Institut de Sociologie [Solvay]" in 1903. Houzé's work was in keeping with racial theories that were then in the ascendant, and he employed photography in an attempt to demonstrate racial differences between the Walloon and Flemish populations. The anthropology sub-section at the Brussels Universal Exhibition of 1897 displayed "a series of photographs taken by Dr Houzé in the Brussels barracks of individuals who best possess the characteristics typical of our component races and those individuals showing a combination of these features to various degrees" (Le Petit bleu de l'Exposition, 15.7.1897).
