Artist-painter and photographer. Recorded as a photographer aged 30 on 8.1.1858 in his foreigner's file. English itinerant, domiciled in Sheffield [GB], who arrived from London. However, there is no trace of Karr operating on his own account in either London or Sheffield. In December 1857, he set up at the Hôtel Rubens, Groenplaats, then Kipdorp, at the back of the courtyard of the Hôtel des Trois Rois. On 2.1.1858, he was at Place de Meir, 17. "A process requiring no more than 10 to 15 seconds. Lessons in photography". He left for Malines but returned to Antwerp on 6.3.1858. He settled a debt of 50 francs he had incurred at the Hôtel Rubens. He was then reported as having "just made an agreement for 3 months with Ruys, hatter of this town [Antwerp], to supply photographic portraits of persons procuring their headgear at this establishment" (Foreigner's File, Antwerp, note drafted 24.3.1858).
1859 */ Liège, Place Verte, 27
"W. Karr, having committed to going to Spa for the watering season, requests all persons wishing to avail themselves of his stay in Liège to have their portraits taken" (La Meuse, 18.6.1859).
1859 Namur, Grand Place, Café de la Paix or Café Galloy
"Id. Kars" in "L'Ami de l'Ordre". "Member of the photographic societies of London and Paris", a statement of doubtful veracity (L'Eclaireur. Le Journal de la Province de Namur. 8 and 11.11.1859; requested customers to apply to coach-builder Mathieu’s premises, Rue de l'Ange; ibid., 10, 11, 17 and 18.12.1859: apply to Café de la Paix or Café Galloy).
1860 Liège, Place du Spectacle, Café du Midi
Advertised his presence in January 1860.
1860 * Liège, Rue du Pont d'Avroy, 42
Change of domicile advertised on 7.5.1860.
