Fernand Edmond Jean Marie, ° 12.9.1858; + 12.11.1921. Symbolist painter, he also engaged in sculpture, engraving and photography. He took photographs preparatory to painting certain pictures, notably of his sister Marguerite (for 'Memories', among other works). In 1895/1896 Khnopff had eight of his works photographed by Albert Edouard Alexandre (see that name). The latter made platinum prints of them, which Khnopff retouched in pastel and crayon. These prints were signed by the artist and marketed as fine-art prints by the printseller Dietrich & Cie. A further three retouched platinum prints were made in 1898. Founder member of the groups "Les XX" and "La Nouvelle Esthétique". A copyright print of each of the retouched photographs is in the holdings of the Print Room of the "Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique / Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België" in Brussels. Khnopff's own camera, with its Steinheil lens, was auctioned off during a sale of the contents of his studio in Brussels on 27.11.1922.
