Activity
1896 - 1898 Bruxelles - Schaerbeek, Rue Rembrandt
° 2.5.1865. A bookseller in Brussels - Schaerbeek, Rue de l'Est, 56 in 1897. This address is probably no. 21, the premises of Ernest Castelein (see that name) and betokens an early collaboration.
1899 * - 1913 / Bruxelles - Schaerbeek, Rue Impériale, 20, 18-20<07-12> or 18<12-13>
Predecessor: Castelein Ernest
Collotype and photozincography. "Industrial work, postcards and addresss cards, letterheads, post-mortem souvenirs". "Illustration and publication of artistic and scientific works. Picture postcards of the whole of Belgium". Louis Lagaert appeared jointly in Ernest Castelein's advertising material by 1899. He took over the business in 1900 although Castelein's name still features until towards the end of 1902. Thus, postcards were signed "E. Castelein L. Lagaert", then "L. Lagaert Brussels" or "LLB". Took full advantage of the heyday of the picture postcard with a sustained policy of direct marketing.
Moved the family home to no. 18 in 1905. Initial "E." in the Mertens directory for "industrial and documentary photography" at no. 20, 1910-1912. This was in fact Louis' son Edmond [Désiré Louis] (° Brussels - Schaerbeek, 28.9.1889; + Zuidschote - Steenstraat, 23.4.1915) who is first mentioned as a collaborator in 1910. Soon afterwards Lagaert stopped production of picture postcards to concentrate on industrial photography. He seems to have closed the business entirely around 1912 when he moved out of no. 18, coinciding with final entries in the 1913 directories. He is said to have worked afterwards for Eugène Desaix (see that name). Recorded in directories as a commercial representative from 1920 to 1933.
