° 12.9.1871. Lekens undertook three tours of duty in the Congo, the first from 6.5.1893 when he was a sergeant in the "Force Publique". Promoted lieutenant on 1.1.1897, captain on 11.11.1899. His third tour of duty was completed on 24.9.1904. In recognition of his distinguished service, Lekens was decorated with the knight's cross of the "Ordre du Lion" on 13.7.1904. "Lekens devoted his leisure time to photography and was requested to transfer his plates, of a rare sharpness, to the government" (Bulletin de la Société royale de Géographie d'Anvers, 1908, p. 883).
