° 4.2.1841. Fairground photographer. Already recorded as a photographer aged 35 resident in Ghent, probably in Place des Armes, in July 1876. Patent of 29.4.1882 [Ghent, no street] for "a photographic system by means of flares"; patent of 31.1.1885 for "a system of caricature photography".

Itinerant here in December 1882.
1893 * - 1894 / Alost, Dendermondsche Steenweg, 3
Opening announced in December 1893 and still advertising here in March 1894. His son Jan Frans Levis (° Ypres, 31.7.1873; + Ghent, 21.3.1908) was recorded as a photographer at no. 1 of this street on 20.7.1898. His itinerant lifestyle indicates that he was in fact a fairground photographer like his father.
1894 * Alost, Vooruitgangstraat, 10
From 24.11.1894. In December 1894 Levis advertised that he was the only photographer who had been allowed to take the portrait of priest Adolf Daens (Het Laatste Nieuws, 30.12.1894).
