Business partners at least from late March 1862 until August 1863. Michaux was probably a sleeping partner. "The handsome establishment of Messrs Maes & Michaux opened to the public yesterday. It was crowded throughout the day. The exhibition is rich in specimens of all types. There are photographs from paintings by our leading artists, from sculptures, and a magnificent selection of portraits in all sizes" (Journal de Bruxelles, 31.3.1862). Portrait of Victor Hugo taken on the eve of the banquet for "Les Misérables" in Brussels on 16.9.1862. During the dessert each guest received a copy of the portrait signed by Hugo himself.
