Maria von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, ° 17.11.1845; + 26.11.1912. Consort of Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders and mother of King Albert I of the Belgians. Accomplished graphic artist and musician. "One of her favourite pastimes was photography. Ever since "snapshots" enabled amateurs to record the events of daily life, [the Countess] armed herself with her Kodak, at the Château des Amerois [her country seat near Bouillon] or when out travelling, to keep a lively souvenir of scenes and sites that attracted her attention. Her family, guests, picturesque and countryside groups, sometimes with their horses, passed before her lens and, after returning to Brussels, the prints she had produced would be assembled in albums to offer an illustrated record of what she had seen" ("Annales de la Société royale d'archéologie de Bruxelles", vol. 28, 1919, p. 18).
