Pierre Le Chevalier, ° 20.9.1823; + 29.8.1899. Received into the novitiate in Namur at the age of 14. Priest and member of the teaching order "L'Institut des Frères des Écoles Chrétiennes" under the monastic name of Frère Materne. He was a photographer and drawing master at the Catholic boarding school in Carlsbourg. "Brother Materne was the director of the Dinant school until 8.1.1854 and had a reputation as a skillful teacher... Brother Materne's broad knowledge and aptitude for the mechanical arts contributed to his services being appreciated at the boarding schools in Carlsbourg and Malonne for over fifty years" (Félix Hutin, L'Institut des Frères des Écoles chrétiennes de Belgique. Tome III. Namur & Alost, 1914). Studio portrait CVs, mid to late 1860s, bear the backmark "Photographie du Pensionnat de Carlsbourg par le Frère Materne". An album that he displayed at the Vienna international exhibition of 1873 included eight photographs, landscapes and views on the banks of the River Semoy.
