Short-lived partnership between Jan-Frans Michiels and Auguste Désiré Laureyns (° Bruges, 28.8.1834; + Ostend, 3.1.1906), a lace dealer, initiated at the end of 1857. Sometimes transcribed "Laureys". They sought permission from the "Commission d'Assistance Publique" to photograph Memling’s masterpieces in the "Hôpital Saint-Jean" in Bruges. "After a long stay in Germany, Mr Michiels has returned to live in his native town, where he has opened a photographic studio with Mr Laureys [sic], his compatriot. Mr Michiels, who was a sculptor of merit before devoting himself exclusively to photography, manages to give his prints a very fine artistic stamp. This quality may be noted to a high degree in his reproductions of the main works by the Danish sculptor Thorwaldsen which he made this very year in Copenhagen" (L'Indépendance Belge, 27.10.1858). The partnership appears to have been dissolved by the time Laureyns received a fine of 50 francs, for an unspecified misdemeanour, on 30.11.1859.
