Louis Marie Jean Servais, ° 18.12.1858; + 7.4.1930. Photoengraver, painter, draughtsman and miniaturist. Employed as a technician at the Bénard printing works, Moreels was a friend and colleague of Armand Rassenfosse (1862-1934) who introduced him to Félicien Rops. He then experimented with Rops on photoengraving between 1889 and 1892. "From an early age, Louis Moreels worked for the press. At a time when newspapers were not yet illustrated with photographic reproductions, he gained an international reputation as a master draughtsman. He was able like few others to sketch, rapidly and in an extraordinarily lively style, all manner of scenes and events" (La Meuse, 9.4.1930).
Founding member of the "Cercle des Beaux-Arts" in Liège, 1892. Moreels abruptly left his job with Bénard in early 1894 and travelled to the Congo to work as a commercial agent. His obituary also mentions a spell in the Amazon. He returned to Belgium and, during the German occupation of World War I, Moreels put his drawing skills to good use to gather intelligence and transmit it to the Allies. Appointed Knight of the Order of the Crown, the Order of Leopold and the Crown of Italy.
