° 5.4.1820; + 21.3.1910. Received in audience by King Leopold I on 15.11.1856 in order to take his portrait, of which we have been unable to find any trace. The third ascension of Nadar’s gigantic balloon “Le Géant" took place in the presence of the King in Brussels during celebrations marking Belgian independence on 26.9.1864. The crowd was held back by barriers which still today bear the name which the public christened them that very day: “Nadar barriers”. A friend of Félicien Rops, he also kept up a correspondence with Désiré Van Monckhoven for many years and with Louis Ghémar. Nadar's correspondence is housed in the “Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Département des Manuscrits”.
