Activity

1895 - 1898 / La Louvière
Edouard Joseph, ° 9.9.1869; + 6.1.1925. Employee at Boch ceramics factory where he may have experimented with transferring photographic images onto ceramics. Member of the provisional committee of the "Fédération Photographique du Centre" in 1896. Corresponding member of the "Cercle Photographique d'Ixelles" until 1909, latterly with Limal (Brabant) given as his address.
1898 * - 1903 / Bruxelles - Ixelles, Rue de Vienne, 35<98-00> or 14<01-03>
Collotype. Publisher of picture postcards. By October 1900, the firm was advertising an assortment of 1000 different views of Belgium, 50 of the Congo and 50 of the Transvaal (Le Petit Bleu du Matin, 12.10.1900). In the ten years from its foundation towards the end of 1898 until 1907, it is estimated that the Nels publishing firm produced 10 000 different postcards. Amongst notable series may be counted ten views of the Congo taken by François-Léopold Michel (see that name) during the scientific mission to Katanga (1898-1900) issued early in 1901. Became an associate member of the "Société d'Archéologie de Bruxelles" in 1901.
1902 * - 1913 / Bruxelles - Ixelles, Rue Simonis, 22<02-03> then 20-22
Successor: Thill Ernest
Member of the “Cercle photographique d‘Ixelles” (Rue de l'Aurore, 45, his private address, in 1904). "Our photographers cover the whole country". In 1907, Ed. Nels transferred day-to-day management of the firm to his brother-in-law Ernest Thill on grounds of ill health. Nels transferred ownership to Thill in 1913 who continued to trade under the Nels name. For reasons that may be to do with the separation of the printing and publishing arms of the business, other branches of the firm in Brussels are recorded as active as "Ed. & Jos. Nels" or "Joseph Nels". There was also a branch in Metz [Lorraine, D] run by Edouard’s brother Paul (see that name).
1901 * - 1903 / Bruxelles - Ixelles, Rue d'Orléans, 24<01> or 34<01-03>
Printing and photoengraving. Active as "Ed. & Jos. Nels" as of 1.2.1901. "5000 views of Belgium" [Monod, 1901].
1904 Bruxelles - Anderlecht, Chaussée de Mons, 190 or 12
Printing and photoengraving. "Nels, J." in the directory.
