William John, + 22.1.1869. Miniature painter and calotypist. Appointed Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria and knighted in 1837. Member of the Calotype Club in 1847 and Vice-President of the Photographic Society of London. Half-plate salt paper print from a paper negative, titled and signed in pencil on verso "Porte de Gand, Bruges / Calotype Sr W. Newton"; another similar print of Damme. Although an enthusiastic exhibitor, Sir William appears never to have shown in public any of his views from Continental trips. Since an identical print of Bruges exists, in two copies, one signed by Egbert Moxham, the other by Newton, it is entirely possible they toured and photographed together.
