William John, + 22.1.1869. Miniature painter and calotypist. Appointed Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria and knighted in 1837. Member of the Calotype Club in 1847 and Vice-President of the Photographic Society of London. Half-plate salt paper print from a paper negative, titled and signed in pencil on verso "Porte de Gand, Bruges / Calotype Sr W. Newton". Although an enthusiastic exhibitor, Sir William appears never to have shown in public any of his views from Continental trips.
