° 29.4.1851; + 4.12.1934. Painter and photographer. Pupil of the Tournai and Brussels Academies. Founding member of the progressive artistic group "L'Essor" in 1876. Pion worked for the Ghémar studio in 1877. Previously using photographs taken by professionals as models for his paintings, Pion purchased his own equipment in 1888 and fitted out darkrooms in Lamain and Brussels. Photographs of country labourers and of the countryside around Tournai. He took photographs systematically as preparatory studies for his paintings, commissioned portraits as well as those featuring peasants done in grisaille, until 1908. Appointed professor and director of the Tournai Academy in 1913. Pion's photographic archive consists of 2,800 glass negatives and a small amount of positives.
