Leontius Eduardus, ° 30.11.1839; + 15.3.1887. Graduate of the industrial school at the University of Ghent. Laboratory assistant to Professor Donny, then in 1870, chemist at the "Musée de l'Industrie", of which he became the director. He gave free public lessons on photography there. "A collection of choice instruments, which grows from year to year, allows explanations to be given more easily by means of experiments and demonstrations. A library at the full disposal of those registered for the lessons is composed of works relating to photography and to all types of reproduction obtained by various [printing] processes (DE VYLDER, G. "Revue photographique", Bulletin du Musée de l'Industrie, t. 83, 1883, p. 133).
Professor of chemistry at the Industrial School, he gave courses on photography from 1870 onwards (officially from 1872; Charles Puttemans would succeed him). A populariser of photographer, he translated into French W. de W. Abney’s "Cours de photographie". Director of the Industrial School in 1886. Founder member of the ABP, he had been the first to propose creating an association. He was its secretary general from 1874 until 1879.
